Frequently Asked Questions

How is MAST racing different than Wednesday night racing?

Just like our tagline says – MAST racing is serious fun, not serious racing. Sure, it's a competition. But our highest priorities are to have fun, be safe, become better sailors, and enjoy the beautiful resource we have in Lake Michigan. Sometimes called social racing or (if you're not from here) "beer can" racing, MAST racing is a family-friendly sport.

Can I participate even if I've never skippered my boat in a race before?

Absolutely! If you feel called to race your boat, we're excited to be part of your new adventure. Of course, it's important that you have a working knowledge of the rules. A great place to start is the Basic Sailboat Racing Rules All Racers Should Know, as documented by our own Ken Quant and reprinted by race clubs all over the world. Additionally, many of our seasoned skippers are happy to "guest skipper" on rookie boats. Just let the Race Chair know and they'll do their best to hook you up.

I don't own a boat and I'd like to race. How do I find a skipper who wants crew?

The secret to finding a boat to race on is that you have to let people know you're looking. Both the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center and South Shore Yacht Club hold crew search parties each spring. These events are open to the public and a great way to meet prospective skippers. Another way to connect is via the MAST Facebook page.

I don't have any racing experience. Will I still be welcome as crew?

Many skippers welcome inexperienced folks aboard. After all, we all start somewhere! Please be sure that you know you're comfortable on the water (not nervous and/or frequently seasick) and that the weather is appropriate. Be honest about whatever sailing experience you do have, and be prepared to listen and learn.

Can I crew on a boat even if I don't join MAST?

Technically, yes. Crew members are not required to join MAST. But let's be honest... you get a summer of sailing and pizza parties and you don't even have to own a boat. Doesn't it seem fair to chip in a few bucks for that? Your membership fee is only $30. Do the right thing.

What is the dues refund policy?

No refunds are given for a shortened season. If an entire season is cancelled, the board will make a decision at that time.
